My observations are that although the bridge is somewhat smaller than the factory bridge, there is plenty of volume and the notes seem "rounder" and more "civilized", seeming to lose their hard edges. I felt that the eitire head was resonating now - never had that feeling before. It is possible that many other bridges could have yielded this result. These are worth every penny. This bridge is really loud and proved to be too loud for me because it introduced a ringing in my 2nd string and a rattling in my 5th string that I couldn't adjust out with head tension or a sock on the underside and 3 different sets of strings didn't eliminate these overtones. My Eagle 2 is a lot louder and brighter now! He was extremely helpful in helping me figure out what would work best given my banjos and playing style. We had 6 band members and a soundman to pay. Like most banjo players I am always searching for the best sound I can get, and as we all know..the best banjo in the world is a dud with the wrong bridge. The clarity, tone, and power achieved through using this mystery wood blew my socks off.especially when this bridge gave my Vega a BOOMING 4th, which I had been unable to find previously. Then i switched back to the Scorpion just for fun. I couldn't believe my ears. Banjo now plays nicely up and down the fretboard. It is purrrrrrfect And just mellowed the tone/brightness a little. The tones from these are rich, full and balanced, and the third string isn't dominant like nearly all the other three footed bridges out there. An the price is beyond reasonable. I just put one of his Ambrosia Red Maple bridges, 11/16 height with a compensated third strong top, on a maple custom Nechville I have had for a few years and I must say it is an outstanding bridge. I almost feel like I need to mute the banjo to not disturb the neighbors. Without any problem, he said send it back and it was replaced with what he described as what many Bluegrass players use to just mellow the tone a little, so about a 1.5 on a scale of ten. One thing that pleases me a great deal about this bridge is that it does not take away anything from my banjo: some bridges give you something really good, but take away from something else equally as fine to give you that "boost." I love it. Also, a good 4th string. It won't disappoint you. The Grover was very plunky but pretty boring. After 3-4 weeks, the banjo has added plunk and punch and is better able to hold its own in a jam. The Ambrosia red maple had a bit more volume and brightness and sounds extremely well balanced over the entire fingerboard and is very responsive. To sum it up, I am pleased to have met David and recommend his products without reservation. Many of the other bridges I've tried lost some of their pleasant, musical nature when trying to deliver more bass tones. I needed a 4-string bridge with a special height (3/4") and spacing (41mm), and I'd had one of Bart's two-footers before (that one doesn't fit in this application), so I knew what I was getting. Steve adjusted the head tension, changed a few strings to different gauges and installed one of his compensated bridges. I'm very pleasantly surprised.thanks Greg! First of all, I used the Sullivan's Roasted Maple bridge as my base for comparisons. Nicely finished maple, ebony top, Crowe spacing. Best bridge by far I've ever used. Each ensuing year Terry would video one of our summer shows from which I would post the best performances. Because of this, I have found increased volume and better (to my ears) clarity in both the bass and the highs.
